IPTV on a Fire TV Stick

Fire OS is Android, with Amazon's store

Underneath, a Fire Stick runs a version of Android. The difference is the shop: apps come from the Amazon Appstore rather than Google Play. There are suitable IPTV players in it, and that is where we would have you get one.

Setting it up

1. Install the Fire TV remote app on your phone first. Two minutes now saves ten later — you will be typing a long password, and the phone keyboard beats a d-pad by an embarrassing margin.
2. Search the Appstore for an IPTV player. Judge it the way you would any app: recent updates, plenty of installs, sensible permissions. Fuller criteria here.
3. Open its playlist or portal screen and enter the details we sent, exactly as written.
4. Let the first load finish. Channels and guide arrive together; a couple of minutes is normal on a stick.
5. Test two channels for five minutes each. A flick through twenty tells you nothing.

Why we will not walk you through sideloading

Half the Firestick tutorials online begin by turning on installation from unknown sources and fetching a file through a downloader app. It is popular, and it is how people end up with something unpleasant on a device that sits on their home network permanently and is almost never updated. We do not distribute application files and we do not guide people through installing other people's. The reasoning, in full.

Keeping an older stick usable

• Clear space. Fire sticks are tight on storage and a full one crawls. Remove apps you do not use.
• Wire it. An Ethernet adaptor for a few pounds removes the commonest cause of stuttering in one step.
• Try the other decoder. Hardware versus software decoding in the player makes a startling difference on older sticks.
• Restart weekly. Hold the play and select buttons, or pull the power. It fixes more than it has any right to.
• Mind the heat. A stick tucked behind a hot television throttles. An HDMI extender to get it into open air costs almost nothing.

4K stick or standard?

The 4K models have more memory and a faster processor, and that — rather than the resolution — is why they stay usable longer. If you are buying today, buy the 4K one even for a 1080p television.
